Geography and environment

Noumea is in a magnificent location:  set on a peninsular of bays and hills, with mangroves, some of which are of exceptional quality, as well as dry forest sheltering many endemic plants.

Offshore, there are many idyllic islands classed as natural reserves which have amazingly beautiful underwater depths.  They also enjoy a mild, tropical ocean climate, characterised by the prevailing pattern of trade winds.

Rich in outstanding biodiversity, the City of Noumea is responsible for its natural heritage.  It continues to preserve this heritage, through cleaning or planting operations, but above all by constantly heightening public awareness.  It is the only way that future generations will be able, in their turn, to look after such a priceless treasure.
